ONE OF BACK TO AFRICA’S CORE FUNCTIONS IS THE REWILDING OF CAPTIVE AFRICAN ANIMALS.
We continue with this endeavour and have recently been involved in an advisory capacity with the adaptive management of 17 endangered Eastern Mountain Bongo that were translocated from Florida USA to Maranje on the slopes of Mount Kenya. This occurred in February 2025. Back to Africa also assists on an expert advisory committee to establish Eastern Mountain Bongo at Ragati, also on Mount Kenya.
Kenya’s last surviving Roan antelope occur in the Ruma National Park close to Lake Victoria in Western Kenya. There are only 28 animals left, and a genetic bottleneck exists. An initiative exists to import ranched roan from South Africa to Kenya and establish two seedbed breeding projects in Kenya as an insurance to save the species.
To this end a delegation of Kenyan managers, veterinarians and other role players visited breeding projects with Back to Africa director Hamish Currie in October 2025 to Limpopo province South Africa to get advice on husbandry and management principles which are specific for this species that are notoriously difficult to manage.
This also involved immobilizing roan antelope to compare different drug protocols ensuring fast smooth induction and reversal. Ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis using a rectal probe was also demonstrated.
Thank you Dr Louis Greef of Medivet Thabazimbi for availing his time and expertise.
